About the city

Welcome to The Potteries

Stoke-on-Trent is a federation of six historic towns: Stoke, Hanley, Burslem, Tunstall, Fenton and Longton, clustered in the heart of Staffordshire. Known collectively as The Potteries, it's the birthplace of the British ceramics industry and home to world-famous brands like Wedgwood, Royal Doulton, Emma Bridgewater, Spode and Portmeirion.

Today it's a city of around 260,000 people, with a young population thanks to the two universities, a buzzing cultural scene, and some of the most affordable rents in the UK.

Six towns, one city

Each town has its own character and history: explore Hanley for nightlife, Burslem for independent shops, Trentham for gardens.

Visit the Potteries Museum, take a factory tour at Wedgwood or Emma Bridgewater, the city's creative DNA runs through everything.

What to do in Stoke-on-Trent

The things students actually love about living here.

Football: Stoke City & Port Vale

Match days at the bet365 Stadium (Stoke City, 'The Potters') are a rite of passage. The club is officially one of the oldest professional football clubs in the country, founded in 1863. Local rivals Port Vale play at Vale Park, and both clubs offer student ticket deals worth knowing about.

Music & the Cultural Quarter

Hanley's Cultural Quarter is the creative heart of the city. Catch indie bands at The Sugarmill, world-class touring acts at the Regent Theatre and Victoria Hall, or browse the studios and galleries tucked down Piccadilly.

Parks & the Peak District

Trentham Gardens (with its monkey forest and shopping village), Westport Lake, and Biddulph Grange are all on your doorstep. The Peak District is just 30 minutes away for hikes and weekends in the hills.

Theme parks & day trips

Alton Towers is roughly 25 minutes from Stoke by car, with onward bus and taxi connections also available from the area, perfect for Fresher's week trips. Other easy days out include the Churnet Valley Railway, the Roaches, and the historic market towns of Stone and Leek.

Shopping

The Potteries Centre in Hanley covers the high-street basics, while Affinity Staffordshire (outlet shopping) and Trentham Shopping Village are great for bargains and indie finds.

Food & drink

Stoke has a great-value food scene, from independent cafés and takeaways around the student areas to restaurants and bars in Hanley. From late-night chip runs to brunch at independent coffee shops, you'll eat well and cheaply. Don't miss the local oatcakes.

Yes. You don’t need a full group to enquire with Beau Homes. Our individual en-suite rooms at Graduate Court let you book your own bedroom in a shared student home, with a private en-suite bathroom and shared kitchen and living space.

You’ll need to complete our application checks, provide a guarantor and confirm your student status. We also carry out affordability checks, usually using evidence of your student loan or other funding.

You’ll need to prove your Right to Rent in England, too. The documents or checks required depend on your circumstances.

Don’t worry about working it all out yourself. Tom and Molly will explain what you need, guide you through the process and confirm the rent, deposit and tenancy terms before you commit.

Can I view several student houses if I’m not sure which one I want?

+

Absolutely. We usually recommend viewing two to five student houses in one appointment so you can compare locations, room sizes, layouts and prices.
